The European Union (EU) recently announced a new strategy on the Indo-Pacific.

EU commitment to the region

The world’s focus is shifting to the Indo-Pacific region in terms of geoeconomics and geopolitics.

As the EU, we have a major stake in the future of the region and, we believe, we will also have a major contribution to make.

Why is the EU now launching a new Indo-Pacific strategy?

Priority areas

What have we taken into account?

A big priority will be our cooperation on global challenges.

Under this strategy, we emphasize that we want to strengthen our digital partnerships, including working closely together to set standards that will shape our digital lives

We also want to deepen our security commitment including counterterrorism and cybersecurity, seeking to make that cooperation as concrete as possible.

In addition, the EU will seek to conduct more joint exercises and port visits with Indo-Pacific partners, including multilateral exercises, to combat piracy and protect

ASEAN is a strategic partner

Regarding the partners we want to cooperate with, the EU strategy covers all our partners who want to cooperate.

We also include China in our Indo-Pacific plans.

In short, the EU’s Indo-Pacific strategy is about scaling up and diversifying our political and economic partnerships in the region.
